It's that time of year again, people are out celebrating Easter with their families while Bronies chill in their pjs, awaiting the new season of MLP. Yes, what a wonderful time of year it is. ^^Opening
For a long time, I've been wanting a change to the opening theme and once again there's no change. I really wish they'd change things up a bit even if it's just the visuals. Take Adventure Time for example, same song but they change up what's happening during the song depending on what's going on in the show. It would be so refreshing to see them do that. Adding one or two characters does NOT count as 'changing it up'.
But you know what they did change? Having the season premier... not be a two parter. Huh. Interesting choice. I mean, these two episodes did revolve around one character but it didn't follow the same plot. It wasn't what I was expecting. I mean, we're 7 seasons in. And THIS is what you break for forumla when there's a perfectly good theme sitting there. >> (Just saying. Totally not throwing shade or anything
Now, I'm not a huge Starlight fan. I don't hate her but, it just feels like the writers were like: "Crap. Twilight is the Princess of FRIENDSHIP now soooooo.. she couldn't possibly
learn new friend lessons... So.... Here's another magically talented Unicorn who needs to learn about friendship to sub for her... But this one is sassy and was once evil... ooooh edgy and different
." So, having two back to back episodes of Starlight was a bit much for me.
I could ramble on but let's just do bullet points from here cause Easter.
Ep 1Things I liked
-Discord trolling Twilight (Seriously guys, whether he realizes it or not, Discord is teaching Twilight valuable lessons. First he hinted at the journal Twilight wrote that led to them solving the Tree of Harmony, then it was a lesson that your friends will make memories without you and that's okay and now this... It's kinda amazing.)
-Discord having other 'friends' than the mane 6 (tears up. He's GROWING UP GUYS!)
-Twilight's cool new spell. (Give me more spells!)
-Seeing Celestia in her every day life. Her little worry shuffle in the palace flashback was so cute <3 (We need more of this writers. Show me more character moments of her, PLEASE!)
-The fact Celestia did not know her name was a saying. xDThings I didn't like
-That episode 2 wasn't Starlight leaving and discovering what she wanted to do in life...
Ep 2Things I liked
-The puzzle room and song that caused them to just miss the record by 2 seconds xD
-The fact Starlight and Trixie are the equivalent of the Muppets' Waldorf and Statler at the train station.Things I didn't like
-Red magic that apparently has been a problem for Starlight but we've never seen it before so... Okaaaaay. suuuuure.
- Trixie written to be a total douche. I mean, she's full of herself but it felt like the writers were forcing it.
-Not having the table fall into someone's hands that could cause a 2 parter episode! Seriously! That was the perfect set up!
Overall, the first episode was a strong start while episode 2 felt like it could have been anywhere in the season's line up. What did you think of the season premier? Let me know in the comments below.
